Fixed my Nokia 930 :) It had locked up solid earlier in the year with a scary looking warning icon (see below) and all usual combinations of reset button presses didn't work for shit.
The volume up/down buttons were behaving strange as well - I feared it had landed on the deck at work one too many times and was kaputt (this is an occupational hazard with any mobile I get as I have to make test phone calls whilst checking phone circuits in the bowels of comms rooms and take pictures of equipment that regularly ends up installed in unusual and awkward locations)
I had a backup phone so I pulled the SIM and put the 930 aside but this was annoying as the camera on the other phone (a cheaper Windows phone) isn't half as good and it is slower - the Nokia 930 was also one of the last decent Nokia/Windows phones before MS decided to screw things up even more.
I find Android phones to be laggy (both the phone and the camera) as well as a privacy/security nightmare and can't afford an Iphone (they are also less physically robust)- a few years previously I've already managed to knacker a supposedly "indestructible" Android device!
I managed though to pop the back off the 930 to check if the plastic bit of the volume/up down buttons was not fouled by anything and correctly pressing on the miniature microswitches and then replace the cover (not so easy compared to other such devices as its not made to be easily removable) - plugged it into the charger (as the accu would of course be stone dead after 3 months not in use); this time round there was no lightning flash but an odd flashing pattern of the "home" icon at the bottom (perhaps signifying a hard reset) and then a message that it had no SIM but 112 calls would work; cancelling this came up with my normal set of icons..
So I put the SIM back in and everything seems to be working again raaa (was impressed that all my Microsoft Office 365 accounts for work just resynced automaticallly once I corrected the device time and date)
this is the error symbol I had on the phone before (not the actual phone, got this off a web search)

haven't had the chance to properly test the camera with "prettier" pictures as it is already dark and I this was the first thing I could find to photograph but it seems to be working well :)
UK : England : Measles warning for UK festivals! Hadn't expected to see this; although it is a valid and genuine warning for younger people who are now in their teens/20s.
Before then there wasn't as much (now discredited) paranoia about childhood vaccinations; TBH when I was a small child there seemed to be even more vaccinations (you would have to go with your parents to random government building near the main hospital site or it was done in the sickbay of school, often there were scary posters on the walls warning about all the diseases you could get if you didn't have these jabs.). I think MMR had only just been invented when I was the required age and my local NHS region still gave separate injections!
I had to have some others on top of those before my parents visited Malaysia in the late 1970s - presumably they all did some good as I am still alive and in reasonable health for their age (this also put me off ever injecting drugs for enjoyment).
But if you didn't have these vaccinations as a child and are going to any large gathering of people it is best to get them sorted out first, measles is nasty and contagious (it used to kill many people in the last century!)

DE : New packaging appearing in Germany My sister (who has been working in DE this week) called me from the airport to see what cigs I wanted her to bring back (these are a gift so 100% legit) as she was having difficulty locating the Luckies.
At first I feared that the EU laws had caused BAT to stop making them as they do have some flavouring/additives (which is where their distinctive taste comes from) but they were still there; what has happened is the rough pictures on cig packets are now made so large even in the rest of EU other than IE and FR which have gone to full plain packaging they now look like this
there are 42 new pics with even more unpleasant pictures of various things that can go wrong with human body and also this aimed at young couples. to be fair both might have some truth although they don't bother me (I'm single and the very last thing I'd want to be dealing with with at this stage in my life is becoming a Dad!) but I couldn't help but think - "this is the 21st century; we've had health and sex education in Europe for 35 years. FFS What sort of spiteful cow lights up a cigarette indoors next to her friends young child in the first place and then sits in Angst that she cannot conceive one of her own; and why does the young mum keep friends like that in the first place?"
PS: in the UK you will now get the harsh pictures and the blanco packaging (in fact a nasty green colour) with standard font - I'm glad I'm not working on a tobacco kiosk these days as even with barcode scanners stock location is going to be a nightmare.

NL : 15th century pet shaming :) this monk in Deventer, Netherlands around the 1400s left a manuscript he was working on unatennded and open at night; a cat (presumably allowed in the library to scare away rats and mice) pissed on the parchment, making a section of the page unusable...
This can be seen below on the right along with a picture of a cat, and two pointing hands, plus an explanation :laugh_at:
“Hic non defectus est, sed cattus minxit desuper nocte quadam. Confundatur pessimus cattus qui minxit super librum istum in nocte Daventrie, et consimiliter omnes alii propter illum. Et cavendum valde ne permittantur libri aperti per noctem ubi cattie venire possunt.”
[Here is nothing missing, but a cat urinated on this during a certain night. Cursed be the pesty cat that urinated over this book during the night in Deventer and because of it many others [other cats] too. And beware well not to leave open books at night where cats can come.]

Solo raver needs help finding a rave. These Maps Made From The Iconic Foods Of Different Places Will Make You Want To Travel And Chow Down
Caitlin Levin and Henry Hargreaves have been all over the world sampling countries and the foods that are popular there. After they realized how much food can become part of a culture's identity, they decided to piece together a number of maps using the foods that the countries and continents are best known for. The results show how food has traveled the globe, helping to unite people from across the dinner table and beyond.
1. New Zealand (kiwi fruit)
2. UK and Ireland (biscuits)
3. India (spices)
4. Africa (bananas and plantains)
5. Japan (seaweed)
6. France (bread and cheese)
7. China (noodles)
8. Australia (shrimp)
9. Italy (tomatoes)
10. United States (corn)
11. South America (citrus fruit)

Solo raver needs help finding a rave. Hello friends,
I've been having ZERO luck meeting other ravers in my area, and even less (believe it or not) in finding raves on my own. I love meeting new people and have no problem going by myself, but I cant even find out where to start looking. Can anyone help a friend in need?123

"retro" system documentation ;) OK this might seem strange behaviour in the 21st century but (perhaps due to my age) - but I sometimes find computers way too distracting and writing things down by hand seems to makes them stick in my brain more.
Even though the water flow meter is a fairly basic system, it is still good practice to write up some kind of system documentation for my colleagues and to remind myself of important bits of the system works (I might eventually reuse the design for an animal detector in my garden).
I also wanted to try and practise/improve my handwriting and stop it getting even worse due to increasing use of computers - it has never been particularly good to start with, the nuns who once taught me (I expect they are all in Heaven by now) would probably give me 6 out of 10 if they are in a good mood and think "I guess he is a bit of a late developer, only took him 37 years...." and probably also thinking "he will have plenty of time to improve when he lands up in Purgatory" (I expect they still use hand written index cards and files for tracking telecoms faults like the PTT did until 1980s)
For anyone who is curious about the pens used (I still often use fountain-pens, otherwise my writing would be even more completely unreadable):
The red text was written with a Lamy Safari, OB nib and Waterman red ink - the blue-black text with a Pelikan M200, M bin and 4001 blue-black ink (that one now always stays at home with me as I am paranoid about mislaying it, I managed to get it for €60 which is a bargain compared to how much they are today!)
