Concern over EDM pirate download sites impact… TBH this is a sad indictment on the kind of people who become "DJ's" nowadays - compared to the vinyl era high quality legitimate downloads of EDM tracks from reputable online businesses such as Juno etc really are dirt cheap; and the artists only get a few cents of revenue as it is. This is brand new content being ripped off (unlike a free download of something like an old-skool vinyl which has been deleted 26 years and you couldn't buy even if you wanted to).
There is no genuine moral reason to resort to the darknet to obtain modern EDM downloads - they are not controlled substances and EDM is very rarely censored anywhere in the world.
Just this week I've had several promotional tweets from well known European trance and house DJ's who are playing in countries which have fairly conservative governments and Islam as the majority religion; yet they and their music (in the middle of an era of global conflict) is being welcomed with open arms...

UK : England/Wales : Hospital admissions due to drugs on the rise This isn't surprising for a variety of factors - especially the lack of proper harm reduction strategies and a "good samaritan" law.
This makes people wary to seek help as Ambulances are increasingly co-deployed with the Police in many areas following a 999/112 call which makes people frightened to contact the NHS before things get out of hand for fear of being nicked and/or put under surveillance - which is a vicious circle as it tends to be in "problem" areas where this is commonplace...

HR : Croatian "eco-fest" delayed due to power, water failure Surely a genuinely eco-friendly event would have contingency plans against this; HR has fairly decent weather in summer making the use of solar electricity feasible and there are plenty of relatively eco-friendly fuels to run gensets?
most festivals I've encountered in UK or friends in Europe have been involved with have more than one source of power and water (which an equally important part of environment awareness?)

US : Pets left hungry due to flawed IOT feeder TBH most pets belonging to owners able to spend $150 on this device are unlikely to be starving (they are usually only used when the animals are already overweight and the vet has advised the owners to reduce their food intake) - although I think its a greater animal welfare issue that people lock their pets up and leave them alone in the first place (and is probably why they get into the habit of overeating as a substitute for company/exercise).
I wonder if any cats/dogs worked out how to pop the lock on the feeder with their paws? (I've seen a few youtube videos of other feeders being hacked by the animals themselves!) :laugh_at:

INT : EDM DJ’s express angst about mental health, addictions Decent article; wasn't expecting to see Above and Beyond being mentioned in the Grauniad to start with; for decades they always treated EDM as "low brow" culture (unless the performers were not from a "western" country) and were biased towards guitar music.
I had noticed myself that Armin Van Buuren went from looking about 18 to looking around 50 in the space of the last few years (poor blighter has lost nearly all his hair) in spite of being worth millions of Euros...
I think all my friends who were part of East Anglias EDM scene (many of them respected producers and promoters have gone back to the day jobs as they have families to support and its less stressful...)

US : Yahoo sold to Verizon Not sure what this means for the UK and Europe as Verizon has little obvious presence compared to USA (although I think they do provide business grade connections in Germany that are trusted by the Government as the BNetzA (German Communications Ministry) uses them for their public facing website.
I hope they at least keep Flickr running and do not mess around too much with the UI as to be fair it works and remains popular with photography, tech and nature enthusiasts (and many people combine all of these hobbies) - especially the slightly older tech and privacy aware folk who only upload pictures that they clearly want to share with others; although these people tend to use adblockers a lot more and are wary of online marketing.
That said I'm surprised Flickr doesn't work more closely with brands selling "traditional" digital cameras (i.e those not part of smartphones) as there is still demand for this equipment and as many people leave their EXIF info in pictures its the first place I tend to look to evaluate real world performance of a camera...

DE : "Smart" Osram LED lamp can cough up your wifi password. WTF is the point of these anyway? Even if they work as expected they are likely to fill the surrounding area with radio interference as well as light (the Zigbee wireless links used can also cut across the 2,4 GHz wifi bands which are already crowded and polluted).
If you really want a pretty lightshow in your house or hackspace there are better tried and tested ways of doing it with DMX which can still be securely linked to remote control systems...

US : CO : Claims of THC contamination in drinking water of small Colorado town Strange case - THC is an unusual thing to be testing potable drinking water for in the first place and it is not water soluble. In Europe the environment and health ministries do permit testing of sewage water to track patterns of recreational drug usage but potable water tests are usually confined to searching for disease germs/viruses or poison chemicals.
A bit worrying that evidence of forced entry has been found at the feed well but these facilities are often broken into and vandalised worldwide by people who are ignorant of what they are and their importance to the locality rather than deliberate saboteurs.
Mind you with the rise of Trump, Brexit and other world events I wouldn't even put it past a disaffected person to contaminate water but it would have cost them money to do this; and if there is genuinely THC in the water than surely that means its further contaminated with whatever solvent the stuff is dissolved in?

UK : East : Aggressive swan attacks 8 model boats, ducks, geese… This is unusual as folk have been sailing model boats for years on the same lake without incident (ducks have even been known to ride on the model barges); the boat club (who are mostly middle aged chaps who do not sail them in a way that would deliberately annoy wildlife) report reduced attendance and the Council considering shifting the swan family if they progess to menacing humans - the swan is already attacking some dogs!

UK : East : Suffolk’s crime rate rises at twice national average At first I thought the rise in reported sexual offences was caused by the historical investigations of the crimes of middle aged, affluent male celebrities, teachers and religious folk as Suffolk has always been a comfortable bolthole for these types - but the spike in incidents relates to urban Ipswich whereas richer people tend to settle in the semi rural Mid Suffolk district.
Allowing for the accidental double counting of crimes mentioned in the article (due to a change in the systems used to record them) I think the cops are to be fair telling the truth - Suffolk remains one of the safest bits of England to live in.
What i do also think is happening is a rise in crimes where the victims and offenders are both young, linked to the increasing use of digital devices. Its fairly obvious that during a bitter economic depression and rise in inequality which has gone on for some years robberies would increase when people openly use these high value items in the street; added to which arguments on social networks do often increasingly lead to real fights.
Young people need to make a Police report to make insurance claims, there is also a high level of Police monitoring of social networks here assisted by British Telecom at the world famous research centre, and more young people (compared with my generation) are prepared to report a crime to Police rather than try and take matters into their own hands.
This might not be a bad thing for overall public safety (rather than estates held to ransom by "gangs") but is not unrelated to the Snowden revelations; amongst many less tech aware young people they now genuinely think "the feds are all over Facebook etc and there is nothing we can do about it (as we don't want to give up using FB) so we may as well just try and behave/fit in with the system".
