DE/DK : Netto-Katzen Netto is a Danish store but this film was made for the German market. (There are or were Netto stores in the UK but these are closing down; seen some pictures on UK news and the shelves are empty and the lights half switched off, even a stray cat would not bother with them).

There is a "making of" video as well, which randomly switches between German and English (with German subtitles)....
UK : East : Police patrols in Ipswich stepped up since Brexit Currently there are double the number of Police cars on routine patrol in Ipswich (including fast traffic and armed response vehicles) especially in areas with higher multicultural populations and around school collection time (14:00-16:00 depending on type of school).
I'd expect this in London and other cities but to be fair Ipswich has remained fairly safe and tolerant in comparison; although I can't help but wonder how much of this is because there are bobbies watching to make sure people don't do anything out of order (and Norfolk is coping as the extra units are now shared between the two counties)
However I've noticed a slight increase in tension amongst teams of younger staff if they are a mixture of English and European people and older work colleagues who have children and grandchildren have told me there is tension rising with namecalling of kids and families; other staff at work who are from overseas are saying stuff like "if we go back to our country on leave can we return and keep our jobs? will we get stopped at border control now?"
also all the younger people who voted Brexit have suddenly realised their foreign holidays and duty free goods are more expensive.....
That said I don't think there is any major threat and although the ARVs and traffic units look scarier I suspect the main reason they are there really isn't because there are maniacs with guns but during bad economic times people become more angry and distracted when driving and more collisions occur.
I remember the same in the USA in the region where all that oil was pissing out everywhere near gulf of Mexico, the sherrif was interviewed on the BBC and said had SWAT teams on per$manent standby and FBI assistance but his force actually had to deploy more traffic resources and the family protection teams as domestic disputes rose through the roof (I am also seeing a lot more SNT (safer neighbourhood team) activity on the estate I live in and seen two bluelight runs in the last two days))
truth about "radioactive" cigarettes? I saw a few years ago various videos claiming that some cigarettes were "radioactive" because sections glowed under a black light (filtered UV light that is not harmful to look at with the naked eye) whereas others did not.
Fluorescence is often confused with radioactivity due to the use of phosphorescent materials based on tritium in watch dials etc that do contain a small amount of radioactive material. These things glow in a similar fashion to some objects placed under the black light - but it is not a detector of radioactivity. To confuse matters further many scientists do use UV-fluorescent material as a marker in place of radioactive substances as its safer!
I had to hand a blacklight CFL in a desk lamp fitting and remembered to save the last cigarette from a packet of a different brand so I had two types to compare - top is JPS Black (Imperial Tobacco) and bottom is Rothmans Royals Red (BAT).
Both have the glowing sections around roughly the same parts of the cig - I suspect that they are likely to be whatever chemical is put in the cigarette papers to try and prevent fires being set by an unattended cigarette (if it was some additive in the tobacco roll then surely the whole of the cigarette would glow?).
Would be interesting to see what the smokers in other countries see (even before the trend towards "additive free" brands British cigarettes have traditionally contained more Virginia tobacco and less additives than those smoked overseas)

UK : British schools offered "Asian maths teaching methods" This slightly worried me at first as I was reminded of the pressure my Dad put on me to always do well in maths at school - but having looked at it the methods SG is using are very progressive (they are from the 1980s and are a development of European progressive education from the 1970s) and less high pressure better than current "Western" teaching!

UK : England : Sex education in high schools increasingly outdated and useless Apparently it has not been updated since 2000 but from what the youngsters mention it is worse than the 1980s when I was a teen - and it is now starting to be harmful.
The survey of young people by the HIV and sexual health charity said infrequent and poor-quality sex and relationship education in schools was creating a “safeguarding crisis” for young people.

Free Parties 1994-1995 [yt]G-9XPlM8hrw[/yt]
Quote:
The Abingdon airfield bust, on the evening that the Criminal Justice Act passed into law. Also shows parties at the squatted Parkway cinema, which is now Camden Odeon, London, charging a £9 entry fee.
Also the Labenski Most site in Prague, Czech Republic which was busted by trigger happy security gaurds the following morning. There's some additional footage of a 'Total Resistance' site party at dawn in Torre Del Mar, Spain.
Filmed and edited in 1994-'95 as part of the 'Disorderly TV' VHS that I distributed free at parties back in the day.

Tramadol, Cure For Opiate Addiction? Tramadol is a non-opiate analgesic, a Codeine analogue. Read quite a few Erowid addiction reports saying that when taking them on opiate withdrawals it pretty much saved them from withdrawals and weaned them off ok.

DE : Open source electric powered bike trailer / handcart This design can carry 150 kilos of bulky load; and the German lass who builds them with her friends at a co-operative farm is also sharing the design
It can be used as a 6 km/h handcart (that is the maximum permitted on European streets) or as a trailer behind a normal bike or an e-bike - the brakes have to be linked so using an e-bike that already has the switched levers would be safer and more convenient, although an unpowered bike would work the cyclist would still have to be quite strong and the whole thing would handle like riding a 3 wheeled e-bike but with the powered rear wheel on a pivot (and affected by the wind, road surface etc) - having the power spread across two wheels should be safer.

SG : The urban otters of Singapore. This would be the equivalent of finding them in the River Tees at Middlesborough, or the Orwell at Ipswich (I don't think the water is currently sufficiently clean in either of these British rivers to be suitable for otters)

DE : The bagpipes of Bavaria (auf Deutsch) Although he is not the only bagpipe-maker in the village; Toru Sonoda (a Japanese chap, slightly older than myself) also builds them in the same region :)

its equally impressive that Florian has a day job in IT but still has enough spare time and energy to build these pipes (I think Germany has stricter rules about what working hours are permitted for employees)

INT/US : American prof uses cat pics to demonstrate online privacy issues The prof used some scripts to check all the photo websites for public geotagged images of cats and added them to Google maps.
He does show folk who are worried about their own and/or their pets privacy how to stop the photos coming up by changing the privacy settings, although it does appear the location tag is held for up to 30 days. The website cannot distinguish between people photographing their own cats, or random ones they see in the street and some data especially in Europe has considerable position errors most likely caused by different GPS coordinate storage formats.
it therefore doesn't cause that much privacy risk to humans or cats; but shows up many issues with the use of smartphone geolocation (including its lack of accuracy) and there is some interesting "big data" split showing the distribution between countries and continents.
it is not intended to be an accurate proportional survey of the number of pet or other small cats in each country (in comparison to one a pet food company or the Environment Ministry might carry out) due to differing access to smartphones and attitudes to privacy per country.
I think it also only stores info for 1 million cats worldwide and devotes most of its resources to people who are OK with their cats location being online - otherwise the prof (who has been doing this since 2014) would likely have crashed his uni's server, Google (which is likely being fed the same data twice) and half the American Internet :laugh_at:
I always turn off my geolocation on my phone (if I am not using an "old fashioned" camera) and meow at the cats I photograph so they know they are being watched :laugh_at:
