EU : what can progressives do in the current climate? this is something that has been worrying me (and maybe others).
I have been monitoring the results of elections in many EU countries recently... particularly FR, NL, DK, DE, all countries geographically and socially close to Britain..
nearly all have had high turnouts but elected centre right candidates despite a history of progressive or at least centre-left government..
and you are seeing anything "alternative" being normalised/squashed if it doesn't fit in with the market economy.. (ungdomshuset, frenchkek>>sarkotek, UK long term squats being evicted etc)
The problem is that it doesn't seem at all like the doomsday scenario of a "descent into fascism" - at least yet..
perhaps more a "descent into mediocrity"; where the society ends up merely led my what I would call a "MittelEuropa" class, where people work hard but don't really play at all and go to bed before 23:00 after only drinking 1 litre of beer maximum..
(it is worryingly like an "idealised" version of Britain a former Prime Minister John Major once made a speech about)..
but it worries me that so many people are making the decision to elect this sort of government and to ultimately accept this sort of society..
So what can us progressives do?
any car nuts out there?? outa interest, gotta be some fellow car nutters on this forum...

killing billy goats in north devon there's a population of wild goats for a thousand years or more
as with many other places in devon and cornwall, the local population is being rapidly displaced by wealthy retired people moving from london and the home counties
these people often move and and then set about changing everything about the place they've moved into, whether it's by destroying the local economy so those scruffy working types will leave and a nice antique shop can be installed into the old factory / fish market / timber yard etc
but this really sums it up... http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/devon/6670923.stm
the people who complained about these wild goats are almost exclusively people who have recently moved into the area
i wish they would all fuck off and die (the people, not the goats)
tree worrys where i live there is a fully grown Horse chestnut tree it is about 40 foot tall . i love it .some new people just moved in today and when i bumped into them as i got home ,we introduced our selves and they informed me that this lovely tree was "coming down tomorrow" . as a part owner of the land i exspressed my disagreement ,they told me its cutting out their light . i pointed out there was only one very large branch causing them concern .does anyone know tree law ??
Magic Mushroom I am new here and will browse the forums in search of an answer but can someone tell me as a newbie, which spores I should try to "study" first?

UK : what do you think will happen as we approach "peak oil?" been wondering about this for a few years now..
its clear that oil supplies are now dwindling and being jealously fought over worldwide.. and no matter who "wins" the Iraq war prices may still rise.
In the short term (and maybe as soon as the next 5-10 years) this isn't going to be doomsday or the end of the world - but I could easily forsee tihngs changing a lot in Britain out of sheer necessity
perhaps a combination of sheer market forces and perhaps a bit of Govt intervention/control (rationing/road use controls) will start making it harder to use motor vehicles for "luxury" purposes, and a slimming down of how many consumer goods appear on our shelves.
Even if China and the East can still make the goods, they might not export them as much particularly if there is less demand due to austerity - I expect the ships at Felixstowe and Ipswich would start containing essentials such as food and fuels rather than luxuries..
I'm not sure how British society could go.
I would like to think the remnants of the "wartime" spirit would kick in and communities come together ut I fear it may end up becoming a lot more authoritarian, with stuff like potential curfews (to prevent race riots for instance as there will be a lot of blame put on "immigrants")
There might even be compulsory labour for those who are not currently in work or contributing to society (stuff like cutting down trees at Thetford for construction and fuel, working with the Council to maintain infrastructure etc)
OTOH I feel that (and this may seem surprising) there will be less control on drugs as they will be accepted as a way of "easing the mental pain" - also you may even get more users of recreational substances as they will be tolerated "provided the work gets done", maybe the use of stimulants might even be encouraged as it was in the last war..
Also those involved in the environmental movements who can actually deliver positive results may finally get some respect and support within society...
What do you all think? Has anyone else considered what the future of this country (or your own if you are outside the UK) will be like?

Yahoo Wmail Problems for Members I learned yesterday that Yahoo in it's infinate wisdom started using greylisting recently which made it impossible for our members to receive email from us. I've corrected the problem now, contact me if you've had any problems and you need help...
Quote:
Greylisting (sometimes spelled graylisting) is a method of defending electronic mail users against e-mail spam. A mail transfer agent which uses greylisting will "temporarily reject" any email from a sender it does not recognize. If the mail is legitimate, the originating server will try again to send it later, at which time the destination will accept it. If the mail is from a spammer, it will probably not be retried, and spam sources which re-transmit later are more likely to be listed in DNSBLs and distributed signature systems such as Vipul's Razor.
Fish and chips how much is a portion of fish and chips in your area?
Here in East Anglia its about £3.70 depending on fish species... curious as I've heard prices are rising due to fish becoming endangered and (at last!) bans on horrendous practices like bottom trawling..12

Students slam ‘brutal’ police http://www.bbc.co.uk/england/looknorthyorkslincs/latest_stories/index.shtml
"Leeds students have claimed police used 'brutal and vicious' tactics to break up a street party."
it never gets reported when it happens to ravers, but when it happens to the middle-class pretentious students, even on a real small scale, then it makes the news. is the class divide over? i dont reckon so....
fair play to them for puttin on the party tho :weee:
P.S: i don't mean all students are like that, but there is a quite large percentage that fit the stereotype. no generalisations made on any students here of course :)
Application form for renting a house ....Rite me an me bf wanna rent a nice house but the app form from the estate agents is evil.
Its like a job application.

The form is 4 bastard pages long and asks for 5 yrs of prev address history...2 referees (considering my lack of prev employment is gonna be difficult)
and all employment details.
Am a bit fucked now for getting somewhere to live cos of losing my job and lots of places dont allow ppl who claim benefits etc.. so fuckin annoying
