Ding, Ding…. Ladies and Gents, without further-a-do, for the inaugural Ruck we are pleased to provide you with the following evenings' entertainment...
MATT O'BRIEN
Matt launched himself onto the world’s discerning dancefloors with his first record, The Portimão EP which was rapturously received amongst lovers of stripped down classic minimal techno. Independently produced, pressed and distributed, it demonstrated the power good music has to make itself heard without any commercial backing. Now Matt presents the second record on his Off Key Industries imprint, The Attic Trax EP, and we are honoured and excited to have him give The Ruck the send off it deserves by performing live in his inimitable style - heavy raw sounds with a nod to house and techno.
MATHES
Following a string of well received releases for respected UK techno imprints Inceptive & Continual, Ruck resident Nick Wilson’s prolific studio endeavours have evolved at an alarming rate; revealing more of his diverse influences and, indeed, a more personal sound and it is with fevered anticipation that we reveal Nick will be debuting his Mathes project – A vehicle with which to explore the rougher realms of house and acid and present many of his recent wave of, as-yet unheard, productions.
Finally, fellow Ruck residents:
LEE BOLTON & THE OUTLET COLLECTIVE
…will be grappling with a hearty selection of electronic, funk, disco and acid gear behind the turntables.
Come join us bringing the ruckus…. It wouldn’t be the same without ya!!!

Israel’s policies are feeding the cancer of anti-semitism Israel's policies are feeding the cancer of anti-semitism
It is a lie that to reject Zionism as it is practised today is to be the inheritor of Hitler's racism
Paul Oestreicher
Monday February 20, 2006
The Guardian
The chief rabbi, Sir Jonathan Sacks, is right. His reaction to the Anglican synod's call for sanctions against Israel is understandable. Hatred of Judaism - now commonly called anti-semitism - is a virus that has infected Christendom for two millennia. It continues to stalk the world despite its most virulent outbreak in Nazi Germany. It should not be left untreated. For too many it remains the unlearned lesson of the Holocaust. It should haunt decent Christians for generations to come.
The German pope knows that particularly well and is on the battle lines against it. On this issue, nothing divides him from the Archbishop of Canterbury and most other church leaders. If, as some now think, today's Jews are the Muslims - hatred transferred - that simply means there is a battle to maintain our common humanity on more than one front. All collective hatreds poison the body politic.
I say this as the child of a German Jewish-born father who escaped in time. His mother did not. I say it as a half-Jewish German child chased around a British playground in the second world war and taunted with "he's not just a German, he's a Jew". A double insult. But I say this too as a Christian priest who shares the historic guilt of all the churches. All Christians share a bloody inheritance.
If I feel all that in my guts and know it in my head, I cannot stand by and watch the Israeli-Palestinian conflict - one of the world's most dangerous outbreaks of collective hatred - as a dispassionate onlooker. I cannot listen calmly when an Iranian president talks of wiping out Israel. Jewish fears go deep. They are not irrational. But I cannot listen calmly either when a great many citizens of Israel think and speak of Palestinians in the way a great many Germans thought and spoke about Jews when I was one of them and had to flee.
If the Christian in me has good reason to be ashamed, so now does the Jew in me. I passionately believe that Israel has the right, and its people have the right, to live in peace and in secure borders. But I know too that modern Israel was born in terror and made possible in its present Zionist form by killing and a measure of ethnic cleansing. That is history. Tell me of a nation with an innocent history. But the Zionism at the heart of Israeli politics is about the present and the future. It makes me fear for the soul of Israel today and the survival of its children tomorrow.
The Israel characterised by the words of Golda Meir that "there was no such thing as Palestinians ... they did not exist" is an Israel that is inevitably surrounded by enemies and that can only survive militarily and economically as a client state of the world's only superpower, for now. Nor can its nuclear monopoly in the Middle East last for ever. Peace cannot be made by building a wall on Palestinian land that makes the life of the miserably conquered more miserable still. A Palestinian bantustan will be a source of unrest and violence for ever.
I say all this despairing of the Israel I love. Its people are my people. The Palestinians are my neighbours. I wish they had stronger and better leaders. I wish their despairing young people had not been driven to violence. Just as I understand Jewish fears, I understand their despair. Only an Israel that understands that too can change it. And there are Jews in Israel and in the diaspora who know it. Most of them, out of a fear of being thought disloyal, are afraid to say what they know to be true. The state of Israel has become a cruel occupying power. Occupations, when they are resisted, are never benevolent. They morally corrupt the occupier. The brave body of Israeli conscientious objectors are the true inheritors of the prophets of Israel. They are the true patriots. What nation has ever loved its prophets?
But the main objective of my writing today, is to nail the lie that to reject Zionism as it practised today is in effect to be anti-semitic, to be an inheritor of Hitler's racism. That argument, with the Holocaust in the background, is nothing other than moral blackmail. It is highly effective. It condemns many to silence who fear to be thought anti-semitic. They are often the very opposite. They are often people whose heart bleeds at Israel's betrayal of its true heritage.
I began with the recognition that the cancer of anti-semitism has not been cured. Tragically, Israel's policies feed it - and when world Jewry defends Israeli policies right or wrong, then anger turns not only against Israel, but against all Jews. I wish it were mere rhetoric to say that Israeli politics today make a holocaust the day after tomorrow credible. If the whole Muslim world hates Israel, that is no idle speculation. To count on Arab disunity and Muslim sectarian conflict and a permanent American shield is no recipe for long-term security.
There are Israelis who know all that, and there are Jews around the world who know it. In Britain, Jews for Justice for Palestinians organises to give Jewishness a human face. Tell them they are anti-semites and they will laugh bitterly, for the charge hurts deeply and is a lie. Prophets such as Uri Avnery give all this eloquent expression, but are heard by only a few. The media are afraid of a lobby that is quite prepared to do them serious damage.
Yes, of course, there are many who express their solidarity with the Palestinian people. Some are Christians. They deserve respect. If, whether wisely or not, they call for sanctions, that does not make them Jew-haters - not in theory and not in practice. My concern, however, is to express solidarity with the Israel that is not represented by its leaders or popular opinion. Once, in the days of Hitler, there was another Germany represented by those in concentration camps alongside Jews and Gypsies, the martyrs who are celebrated today. There is such an Israel too. Its voices are still free to speak, though often reviled and misunderstood. That Israel has my solidarity, as all Jews have my love and prayers.

DEETRON =
Over recent years, Sam Geiser aka Deetron has emerged as a rising star in the Techno world. His list of musical achievements stretch back to the early nineties – and on paper it makes for quite an impressive body of work. This is all the more remarkable, considering the fact that Sam is still 26 years of age. This can probably be explained, in part, by his family background. Born in Bern, Switzerland, Music was a constant in the Geiser family home. Sam’s father’s activities as a jazz musician ensured that he was surrounded by music from a very early age, sewing the seeds of his own musical interests. But it was Hip-Hop that encouraged this to flourish into an active involvement in music, during his teens. Sam soaked-up the music of Gangstarr, A Tribe Called Quest, and Prince Paul like a sponge, and was quick to realise the role of the turntable within this context, taking up DJing in 1992. Early Hip-House producers, such as Todd Terry, also captured his attention, and Sam began to make the transition to more 4/4 orientated sounds – picking up on the now classic output of Chicago and Detroit- based electronic musicians and introducing this into the sets he was, by now, playing around his home town, and further afield in Switzerland. This led, in 1994, to his first big break – securing a residency at Zurich’s reputed club, Trax at the Rohstofflager. A meeting with Stefan Riesen, head of the fledgling Phont music, led to the release of Deetron’s first single – as Soulmate, in 1997. Possible the most fruitful partnership of his career so far is that with Belgium’s Music Man label. Beginning with the ‘Dolls For a Diva’ 12” in 2001, and including several more 12”s and a superb mix CD that acts as ample testament to Sam’s skills behind the turntables. Music Man are also the label that Sam has chosen to release his debut full length release, due to drop in 2005. Geiser has come a long way in a relatively short period of time, but it’s no fluke ascension given his considerable talent and hard work. What’s more, he shows no sign of flagging. Whilst 2003 has been a very busy year, with extensive worldwide DJ dates, singles for Music Man and Intec, and high profile remixes for Ennio Morricone, Victor Simonelli, Gary Martin, and Mark Broom, 2004 has taken his DJ-schedule to yet another level and he remixed Funk D’Void, Oxia, Joris Voorn and Monika Kruse. A new single is set for release on Music Man in March 2005 and he’s now near completion of the aforementioned debut long-player, set to combine Sam’s love of house, classic techno, electro, latin and jazz influences - oh, and expect a few surprises, too…

Warp speed in your living room? Warp speed in your living room?
Always wished you could take the helm of a futuristic spacecraft, seeking out new life and new civilisations . and all from the comfort of a West Midlands apartment? One British designer has gone further than wishing; he.s living the dream.
It.s long been recognised that die-hard Star Trek fans are among the most (delete as appropriate) devoted | obsessed | just plain weird that the film industry has ever engendered; aficionados often dress in 24th century attire, can learn and correspond or converse in the languages of the various alien races, and even be joined in Klingon wedlock in a ceremony complete with mock betleH combat (that.s a sort of metre-long mezzaluna with a bad attitude, for the uninitiated).
One fan (and rarely does the term.s etymological root, fanatic, seem more pertinent), though, has boldly taken his devotion beyond the convention hall and converted his one-bedroom flat into a fully-featured replica of the interior of a Federation spacecraft.
Tony Alleyne, an interior designer living in Hinckley in Leicestershire, has exercised his trade on his own apartment in a quest to create a totally immersive Star Trek environment . in his own words, he didn.t want just a Trek .theme. but for visitors to feel they .were not in the 21st century.. To this end, he has faithfully reproduced a variety of features culled from the cult show.s various sets, designing and building each from scratch.
Starting with style and fittings modelled on the Starship Enterprise, Tony has continued to develop and update his décor and the flat now takes its inspiration from one of the several Trek spin-offs, Voyager. Features include voice-activated lighting, command and operations consoles, LCARS terminals (Library Computer Access and Retrieval System . I know, obvious when you think about it) and, according to at least one reviewer, a .fully functional transporter room. (does NASA know about this?). Even areas not often depicted in the series, such as the kitchen and bathroom, have been made over in 24th century style.
Tony isn.t alone in his efforts; German fan Robby Amper, for example, has created a replica Enterprise bridge in his Munich apartment, to be used in the making of fan films.
The attention to detail and insistence on the quality of the finish, though, sets the British designer apart. More than just a tribute to his beloved series, Tony views his creation as an attempt to challenge and possibly overturn some of the established principles of interior design.
He.s chosen a good subject; Star Trek from its earliest days has been noted for the efforts above and beyond the call of duty by its creator, Gene Roddenbury, and his creative staff to make their future world as plausible as possible by extrapolating today.s social, cultural and technological trends into the future.
Sadly (and not a little ironically, given Star Trek.s efforts to depict an .unmonied. society), it.s been revealed that Tony.s obsession has cost him more than a few strange looks and some gentle ribbing down the pub; the intrepid designer, we learn, is bankrupt.
Determined to turn his devotion to the series and its distinctive styling into a paying proposition, Tony hoped that the example of his 24th century des. res. would inspire other fans to hire him to perform similar conversions.
Despite taking out credit to the tune of £100,000 (on top of the £12,000 cost of the actual conversion) to market the service, however, there have been no takers. Tony blames marketing and merchandising advisors in both the UK and US for encouraging him to invest too heavily in a high-risk proposition. Even attempts to sell the apartment on have been unsuccessful; an eBay auction in 2004 offered the property for $1m but, possibly because of its location, was unsuccessful.
Obsessed fan or design visionary? A bit of both, in all likelihood. But at least Tony Alleyne has the satisfaction of coming home each night to his own little slice of the 24th century . and how many of us can claim that?

UK : N : Twitchers twitted by a plastic owl! from the Northerner.....
I wonder if you can buy the owls from UU (or their suppliers?) I may have to install a large WLAN antenna in a rural area, and do not want birds perching upon it and knocking it out of alignment...
Top marks for art to whoever designed the mystery bird that hoaxed the gullible folk of Bamford for much of January.
One woman in Linnell Avenue spent five hours scanning the rare Eagle Owl as it sat motionless on an electricity pylon, undeterred by all the volts crackling past on their way to heat and light Lancashire.
The Royal Society for the Protection of Birds was alerted, and Bamford almost had one of those sudden deluges of twitchers.
But just in time, the Rochdale Observer reports, someone realised the owl was so inert and apparently contented because it was made of plastic to a design drawn up by United Utilities.
"People in the area complained about pigeons, so we put it up there to stop them, and it has been working," a spokeswoman for the company said, adding the usual Blue Peter-style warning about trying something similar at home.
"While our engineers can do this quite safely, we wouldn't advise people to do this themselves."
