WELCOME HOME
Not just a place, but a vision! 10 years ago Gino Lo Pinto and Aaron Britt set out to start something that would eventually become one
of the most talked about movements in Vegas nightlife history: Utopia. This place was special. From the moment you walked thru the door to the sun
rising in the morning you knew you were part of something bigger than yourself. From the djs, to the magicians, to the club kids, to the artists, to the
strippers and techno geeks, all were special and had a place here. This was an era before bottle service, talent wranglers, and a couch being
defined as real estate. This was an era of idealism, creative freedom, and above all else this was the era of the dj. For one weekend, Las Vegas will
pay tribute to a movement ahead of its time and paved the way for the renaissance of Las Vegas nightlife. This weekend will feature performance art,
world class djs, cutting edge live acts, an old school cast of characters, and a vibe only Utopia can create. “Be prepared for enlightment and let love
guide you for the rest of your days. Now, relax and open your mind, release yourself into the vibe, and you will find . . . Utopia!”

CN : Google to censor search engine in China They may have stood up to the Feds, but the Mandarins won this battle... Google.cn is to censor all searches in China.
http://technology.guardian.co.uk/news/story/0,,1694294,00.html
This is as much though because of commercial pressures as pressure from Beijing...
Google is a private enterprise. Its job is to deliver shareholder value as well as services. This it does by increasing its user base worldwide.
They were offering a clear feed from US-based servers but the Chinese make links to these slower - so Google were losing market share in CN to a local Chinese search engine (which presumably accepts the national laws regarding censorship).
There are a lot of Chinese net users! If they dug their heels in and pulled out of China, Googles investors would whinge that they have simply "walked away from a lucrative piece of business", and that every other company operating in China has complied with the national law of a sovereign nation. Ironically many of these investors are in Western countries!
Google has also removed services that could get people in trouble such as blogging etc, but this is as much a potential damage limitation exercise as they know the Chinese security services will get court orders for any data they see on blogs etc they wish to investigate further..
A good example of how a "free market" doesn't guarantee "freedom of speech and expression" - and how much power China is getting worldwide these days..
incidentally anyone know what happened to the "open directory" project which was supposed to be an "open source/non commercial" search engine?
I’m sorry our rave turned into a riot http://www.eveningnews24.co.uk/
06 January 2006 13:03
A raver today made a public apology to families living in a city street following a New Year's Eve riot outside their homes.
Martin Hale, 20, from Flordon, near Long Stratton, said it was never his intention to frighten families and pensioners when clashes between police in riot gear and 300 revellers took place on their doorsteps in the Fifers Road area.
Hundreds of youngsters gathered for a free party in a disused warehouse in nearby Twickenham Road and a riot erupted after police attempted to confiscate sound equipment.
People living nearby said they had their New Year celebrations ruined by the clashes.
Mr Hale said: “I would really like to apologise to the people living there. We had no idea that things would escalate like they did. We didn't intend to be anywhere near people's homes.
“We ended up on the estate but at the time I didn't think about the fact that we might be frightening anyone. We just wanted to be able to go to the party. I don't think anyone could have expected what happened; it was a very strange night.
“Most of the houses didn't have any lights on so I thought people must be out, but perhaps they were keeping a low profile because of what was going on.
“When I read in the paper about the families living there who were scared because they didn't know what was going on I felt absolutely terrible. Looking back I suppose I would be pretty scared if there was a riot with hundreds of people outside my house.
“All we wanted was to be able to have a free New Year party. We didn't think it would come to this. I love going to events like this because they are fun and safe. It's a freedom thing really and I hope the people living nearby will understand why we did it. If you go out to clubs in the city everyone is drunk and it can be really dangerous. I don't ever worry about being beaten up going to these events and my mum likes it too because she always knows I will come home safe.”
Earlier this week ravers joined the storm of criticism levelled at police over the heavy handed way officers handled the situation.
But traders and people living nearby say the police should have done more to break up the party which started just before midnight on New Year's Eve and went on into the afternoon on New Year's Day.
Families and pensioners in surrounding roads said they were kept awake by loud music and had to clean up after broken bottles, faeces, and rubbish were left strewn on streets and in gardens.
The police are looking to prosecute the organisers but no arrests have yet been made. The investigation into the incident is being led by Det Sgt Gary Bloomfield.
He said: “I would like to appeal for the public's help. I would encourage anyone with information to contact me as they could have important information for us. Any information we receive will be treated with the strictest confidence.”

For the 2nd May bank holiday weekend?
Dragon Festival, Orgiva, Spain This year sees the tenth annual Dragon Festival in Cigarrones, near Orgiva. Possibly Europe’s largest and longest running free festival, the Fiesta del Dragon takes place on the 17th to 19th of March to celebrate the arrival of the Spring Equinox. Thousands of people will gather to enjoy three days and nights of anarchic and vibrant contemporary culture.
In 2005, after 3 years of prohibition the mayor of Orgiva finally realised that he could no longer stop the Fiesta del Dragon. To do so would be in contravention of the Spanish Constitution and the European Convention on Human Rights. Suddenly organisation did not mean arrests ! This allowed the people of Cigarrones and the surrounding Alpujarra to put a festival together that reflected the diverse aspects of life and celebration here.
