- UK : Pay as you drive scheme – a dangerous idea! Not often you see me on the same side as the motoring lobby; but this is a dangerous idea. the current system of duty on road fuel is the fairest - your vehicle uses more fuel with distance and engine size anyway so those with the petrol guzzlers pay more... this system would encourage rat-running through cheaper rural areas as well :( there is also a serious personal freedom issue with installing trackers in every vehicle. Although the govt will emphasise positives such as you could have a satnav system as well so you will never get lost, once this system is active any car without a tracker would be stopped by traffic cops; and it would be trivial to deny certain people use of the roads for whatever other reasons - you could kiss goodbye to free party convoys, they would be stopped and dispersed within minutes of setting out on the road.. :( 'Pay-as-you-go' road charge plan Drivers could pay up to £1.34 a mile in "pay-as-you go" road charges under new government plans. The transport secretary said the charges, aimed at cutting congestion, would replace road tax and petrol duty. Alistair Darling said change was needed if the UK was to avoid the possibility of "LA-style gridlock" within 20 years. Every vehicle would have a black box to allow a satellite system to track their journey, with prices starting from as little as 2p per mile in rural areas. Governments will upset at their peril society's wish to do what it wants to do and that is to move around Professor Garel Rhys Centre for Automotive Industry Research Mr Darling has outlined his proposals to the BBC - previewing a speech he will give to the Social Market Foundation on Thursday. "This is a prize well worth going for. We've got to ask ourselves: would it work. The Department of Transport says the scheme would be fairer because those who travel greater distances would pay the most. "We have got to do everything we can during the course of this parliament to decide whether or not we go with road pricing," Mr Darling said. Improving alternatives "Providing this tax was substitutional to fuel tax and road tax and provided we had some other guarantees then I think, for a lot of people, this would be a tempting option," she said. Environmental group Friends of the Earth broadly welcomed road charging but warned the transport crisis could only be tackled if money raised was invested in improving alternatives to car travel. Professor Garel Rhys, director of the Centre for Automotive Industry Research at Cardiff university's business school, believed road pricing would have to be introduced in the UK. But he warned: "The key is trying to introduce those tolls without affecting the flow of traffic, ie. not having to stop and pay at a booth which caused congestion itself. Bay City star admits crash charge Bay City Rollers star Les McKeown has admitted crashing his car while he was more than twice the legal alcohol limit and leaving the scene of an accident. Thames Magistrates heard he claimed he had not been driving when stopped by police after hitting another car and a traffic island in north London in 2004. The court heard the 49-year-old, of east London, was convicted of reckless driving after a woman's death in 1975. McKeown was granted unconditional bail and will be sentenced on 12 May. District Judge Jackie Comyns warned the singer: "If you are found driving while disqualified you will be sent to prison." 'Effectively panicked' Mark Parker, prosecuting, said McKeown had walked off after the accident, ignoring the request of a witness, trying to hail a cab. The singer then went into a house and afterwards left with two other men and a baby in a Jeep Cherokee. The witness called police, who tailed the vehicle and stopped it and then arrested the singer. Michael Atkinson, defending McKeown, said he had "effectively panicked". He failed a roadside breath test and was found to have a toxicity reading of 75 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath - more than twice the legal limit. When stopped by police he claimed he had not been driving the car and had just returned from a meeting with Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood. McKeown, of Lower Clapton, east London, became famous in the 1970s as lead singer of the hugely successful Scottish band whose hits included Bye Bye Baby and Shang-A-Lang. - UK : Wales/Cymru : Swansea police use electronic drug detectors The use of "electronic sniffer dog" equipment is becoming commonplace in England as well.. note the appearance of that "rave" picture (the one the BBC always use!) in the Welsh version.... Incidentally I think some of the CID were also at the UK Tek (they turned up in a distinctive car which was later seen in Swansea, just outside the main police station!) Dozens held in violent crime ops Police in Swansea have arrested 53 people in a crackdown on violent crime and drug use. More than 50 officers were involved in raids codenamed Operation Condor to take DNA swabs and fingerprints. Clubbers were also tested with new kit to see whether they had been in contact with illegal substances. South Wales Police said the seasonal operation had targeted violent crime ahead of the summer influx of visitors. Several other initiatives were also carried out, including a special inspection into door staff licences. In addition, the drugs-testing equipment was used at a number of pubs and clubs. 'Without fear' Inspector Colin Wooldridge said a series of initiatives had cut violent crime in the city by 8.5% on the same period last year, but the force still wanted to send "a clear message" to potential criminals. He said: "The summer is coming and we are aware that there are more visitors coming to the city. "We want everyone to be able to enjoy themselves without the fear of becoming victims of crime, not only at the beaches, but also at the city centre and anywhere in the city. "(Operation Condor) is a stark message to criminals that everything possible is being done to curb their illegal activity." The 24-hour operation, in which police resources in the city were pooled, began on Friday. - Camping :cloud9: I recently went camping with friends in the most amazing place, panoramic views, beautiful sunshine, cool forests, refreshing rain, mystic mists, mixed souls traveling to unite to be able to express themselves and have it their way to loud phat tunes 24/7. What more could we ask for except the right for us to be able to let our hair down too. I was blown away thank you all :flowers: , loads of appreciation to the talented and amazing people who let us Hav It :bounce_ci . I met so many people and will hopefully get to know more of you peaceful bunch. HaHa i had loads of fun, respect :you_crazy , and loads of hugs your way :you_crazy .

Although 3 years may not seem like much, the sentence often carries on after the cell door is opened; there is always the risk of reprisals from the victims family and its very difficult to get a job once you've been inside and have got a record for drugs... Man jailed over girl's drug death A man who sold 10 ecstasy tablets to a Plymouth teenager who died of an overdose after taking them has been jailed for three-and-a-half years. Lisa Gardner, 17, died early on New Year's Day at a friend's house, Plymouth Crown Court heard. Gregory Stevens, 31, of Thames Gardens, Plymouth, was sentenced after admitting selling Lisa the tablets for £20, the price he had paid himself. In mitigation the court was told it was an "isolated act of stupidity". 'No profit' Llewellyn Sellick, prosecuting, said the taxi driver who dropped Lisa off at Stevens' home on the evening of December 31 described her as "upbeat and happy". But three-and-a-half hours later an ambulance was called and paramedics found her lying in the hall in cardiac arrest, he said. Stevens' wife Emma, 24, initially told police she had dropped Lisa off in Plymouth's Union Street clubland area at about 2200 GMT on New Year's Eve. But on 3 January her brother David Travers, 19, of Manston Close, Plymouth, called detectives to say he had supplied the ecstasy to Lisa, his ex-girlfriend. Officers arrested all three, but in interview they admitted the story was untrue. Travers said he had been trying to save Gregory Stevens from prison. Emma Stevens, who admitted two counts of attempting to pervert the course of justice, was given a two-year community rehabilitation order. Dressed in black, she wept as her husband was sentenced. Travers pleaded guilty to one count of attempting to pervert the course of justice and was sentenced to six months in a young offenders' institution. Nick Lewin, mitigating for Gregory Stevens, said: "The only benefit there was for him was he received payment on the amount he paid in the first place for the drugs.
