Will print media or standalone media soon have more freedom of speech than the net? been thinking about this for a few days...
its of course possible for authoritarians to burn books, destroy leaflets and smash printing presses...
but that needs lots of jackbooted heavies, and spies to find and stalk the source and distribution routes of the print media, and vehicles, uniforms and weapons...
But online it only takes a few keypresses by one person with the right access levels on the right network - the subversive message will never get through, or could even be automatically filtered by software which can even handle complicated East Asian languages...or its source can be traced to someones home broadband connection within a few seconds..
net censorship is now becoming trivial and commonplace even in the West, passed off as "workplace e-policy" or "parental controls".
But..
"standalone media" such as a book/leaflet, or even a CD/DVD or memory chip containing multimedia is far harder to filter and censor, or for cops to make use of unless someones house is raided (which hopefully doesn't happen that often unless people are careless about drugs...)
you could still use the net to prepare such media, particularly if shared as encrypted fragments of a project between trusted people
TBH stuff like party pics/vids doesn't even need this level of paranoia, its just a matter of going back to "web 1.0" rather than putting the stuff on bait places like youtube and murdochspace...
what does everyone think? could this be the way forward for stuff such as some party pics and info, a way of clawing back some of the lost freedoms?
"Poirot, we have a report of a missing party!!!" yes i have heard that this friday there is a party near the south of england area (sorry to be so explicit over the names of the area) was wondering if anybody knows about it, a friend said she heard off of a friend of a friend, that she doesnt know. this makes things hard to find out, so i came to my trustworthy partyvibe ppl, anyone like to enlighten me,
PM me if its specific details, or if u just wanna talk about summer, cats, or troubles u may have with ur garden.

UK : LDN : spate of buses colliding with pedestrians/cyclists There have been four RTCs between London buses and pedestrians or cyclists in just 48 hours, with fatalities and serious injuries
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/london/6595153.stm
yet when I lived in London, most recently in the early 1990s, collisions involving buses were extremely rare, despite the capital being a dense and busy place...
Is a combination of bad road layout/overcrowding, the sheer pace of life and/or people (including bus drivers who are normally very safe drivers) just not caring about anyone else any more?
Sewage spill in the Firth of Forth, Edinburgh Oh Shit!!!! (sorry)
This has only just come on the news today.. which is appauling as the incident occured on Friday afternoon..
We have been away for the weekend and saw all this on the news before we came back up the road, it is literally just down the road from us.. It's shocking that the public weren't alerted to this earlier. The weather has been great all weekend here with loads of people heading to the beach..

Drinking clampdown for under 15s is too much or not enough take your pick ....
bbc.co.uk wrote:
Calls to prosecute parents who give children under the age of 15 alcohol at home are a step too far, according to a leading Scottish charity.
English charity Alcohol Concern wants a toughening of the law south of the border to tackle under-age drinking.
But Alcohol Focus Scotland fears that putting alcohol completely out of bounds could make it more tempting.
The charity favours the continental approach of educating children's palates responsibly.
The voluntary organisation claims this could help change Scotland's drinking culture by encouraging respect for alcohol.

Parents who give alcohol to children aged under 15 should be prosecuted, a charity has said.
The call comes in an Alcohol Concern report on the government's Alcohol Harm Reduction Strategy.
The study highlights figures that suggest a large increase in the amount of alcohol being drunk by 11 to 13-year-olds.
Public health minister Caroline Flint told the BBC she did not think the proposals would be enforceable.

Iran Cracking Down on Dress Codes
Quote:
It is the talk of the town. The latest police crackdown on Islamic dress has angered many Iranians - male, female, young and old.
Quote:
They are stopping pedestrians and even cars - warning female drivers not show any hair - and impounding the vehicles and arresting the women if they argue back.
Middle-aged women, foreign tourists and journalists have all been harassed, not just the young and fashionably dressed.
Overnight the standard of what is acceptable dress has slipped back.

Though the authorities want coverage internally to scare women - they don't want the story broadcast abroad.
The BBC's cameraman was detained when he tried to film the police at work and the government denied us permission to go on patrol with the police.
Quote:
And it's not just women who are being targeted this year.
Young men are being cautioned for wearing short sleeved shirts or for their hairstyles.
Morad - a hairdresser whose gelled hair is made to stand straight up - says it's necessary for him to look like this to attract customers.
"These last few days I don't dare walk down the main roads looking like this case I get arrested," he says.

Supreme Court ruling on abortion services
reuters.co.uk wrote:
The U.S. Supreme Court's ruling last week that outlawed a certain abortion procedure could be a first step of greater government intrusion into private medical decisions, doctors said on Monday.
The ruling will also almost certainly intimidate doctors who provide any type of abortion services, according to a series of commentaries in the New England Journal of Medicine.

fucking local rag! a few weeks back, a pupil at our school, who is 14, took a dodgy pill that he thought was e, and went to hospital because he "felt ill". well, it was dealt to him by another pupil who was 15, and this geezer was expelled (the person who took it wasn't even suspended). he was a violent chav cunt anyway, so noone much cared buuuut....
this week the local paper runs a story "DRUGS PUPIL IS SENT HOME" on the front fuckin page (they must have been stuck, cos it aint nowt new).
now it's this daily mail type "name and shame" that pisses me off, and the decision by the headteacher to ring up the press and invite them to run a story on it.
the story had everything apart from the actual names - but in a predominantly rural society, everyone was asking and they found out. the incident had long been forgotten by the students, and the pupils involved could live and learn, and the person who took it was given another chance.
not now. does anyone agree that effectively "naming and shaming" a 14 year old is wrong? the kid doesn't stand a chance now, half the fuckin county know who he is, because the idea of class A drugs being dealt in school (shit shock horror, nowt new really) generated quite a topic of conversation, now the geezers name is everywhere.
and completely immoral by the headteacher to encourage word being spread about the incident, just so he could go on about his "zero tolerance" to drugs and behaviour issues.
i'll scan in the paper and post it ina minute...
am i over-reacting? i wasn't mates with either, but ffs they are 14 and 15, and they are on every newspaper "stand" thing for miles around, people know em by now... tory bullshit area too, not a good attitude towards drugs.
also, it's not as if the area is particularly "good" - hundreds from the school take drugs and people KNOW that. it's just these kids have been marked by the media.
rant over... :weee:
2C-E Experiance Report 2C-E
Experience report
Dose: 15mg Oral with a beer.
Come up took a couple of hours, got the first warning signs of getting high in the first 45mins. Felt nauseas at the pub and was sick in their garden. Glad I didn’t have to clean that one up. We left to go have a few bongs and then go lounge around on a field. My mates were both sick too but it wasn’t really that bad, like I wasn’t bothered about being sick. In fact we were all making a huge joke out of being sick and trying to score points. Everything that was happening was hilarious. I loved it. We were peaking around 4 hours in and the visuals were pretty damned banging, lots of changes in light intensity and geometric patterning. I had a vast amount of energy and was being quite egotistical in a joking kind of way. I didn’t get anywhere near loosing my ego. This chemical seemed to increase my mucus production and I had an unusually large amount of mucus; this was not a problem just an interesting side effect. We dosed at 9 at night and by 7 in the morning I was feeling pretty normal again and although I still couldn’t sleep I didn’t feel very tired. I went home by 2 that afternoon and drank myself silly. Its now the second day since I took the 2c-e, I feel good, no bad come downs at all. The only negative is the nausea on the come up and slight bowel discomfort on occasions throughout the night.
I had no problems the day after but my friend was sick a couple of times. He had drunk more than me before we dosed and after we dosed the 2c-e.
