- UK : What *are* "core British values?" http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/education/6294643.stm I can see what they are getting at.... I've always been happy to consider myself as "British Asian" as it is a unique culture and community that has contributed a lot to this country... but I do think a lot of white kids are now left unsure of their identities and insecure.. OTOH I think one problem is that British people are often too quick to moan and criticise one another without looking for a solution and they create negativity that destroys enthusiasm (particularly that of kids) Plus a lot of successes of Britain were (and to an extent still are) in the fields of engineering (railways, telecommunications and computers) and these things are no longer seen as "cool". And when we do have something good/fun in Britain we tend to flog it to death (like the rave culture) and it is then often suppressed by the hand of the authorities when it gets too "anarchic/hedonistic" I still think there is a lot of tolerance in this country (lets face it, where else in the world would people still get away with unlicensed use of land and buildings without payment for 17 years? There are many places where the cops or property owners would have defended their resources with firearms!), and a lot of free speech, but ironically they are under threat from the constant moans and whinges of the very people who benefit from it... And TBH if I really wanted to I could emigrate to SE Asia fairly quickly - but I still prefer to live in the UK... There is obviously something good about this country, but its hard to defiine (and probably even harder to teach to kids). what does everyone else think? Also interested to hear what those of you who don't live in the UK think of Britain..

- Losing it on K I need some help here. A good friend of mine got well into K about 6 months ago and until recently didn't see it do him any harm. However... After caning about 20g+ in 24 hours and spending a lot of time meditating he informs he he's "found enlightenment" (excellent, could do wiv some of that myself :wink: ). The worry- He's realised he's a prophet; is a medium for a being not of this world; can teleport; etc, etc. I was, obviously, concerned but thought it may be a K experience that he found amazing and would come down to earth soon but as its been a week now i'm really worried and not sure what to do. His personality's not changed or owt and he's in no way a harm to himself or others. In fact he's less stressed and happier than i've seen him in ages. Anyone else had an experience like this??? - really need help 2 things, firstly ive just moved to a new area (Milton Keynes) and therefore am not in touch with ne of my old party mates, so i need to find some more cos i miss free parties (the amazing views and watching the sun come up while stomping mostly). ne way send me a reply if u can help me out. i know nobody probably will cos everyone thinks everyone else is old bill but i can assure you i aint, also i need a hand tracking down a particular tune, im pretty sure it was Brainskan, and the song was called Seeing Red, it contains the lyric, "im seeing red, instead i turn lyricist", i know these are 2 well random requests but any help would be really appreciated. walex - stomp till i die

- Is K killing the atmosphere at parties? Just noticed no ones talking about this so thought I'd say something. It seems to me that nerely everyone at parties now is taking ket. Done it a few times and had a wicked time but no one seems to be dancin at party's anymore,more just swayin or wondering round in their own little worlds. - UK : Wales/Cymru : Welsh Ambulance services to deploy Airwave radios although this is obviously a good thing for people who need emergency treatment, and for major incident comms, it does mean that the services will be able to exchange lots of data/info/even gossip (these are also secure mobile phones) it will also be now instantly possible to deploy both Ambulance and Police units together to "high risk" situations such as raves and clubs (ironically this is often because pissed/drugged up people can't tell paramedics apart from cops and often hassle them!) I remember reading somewhere even a few years ago that some Welsh Ambulance units were carrying airwave handsets so they could work closer with cops when dealing with the weekend townie pisshead-related incidents.. Quote: Ambulance trust's £55m radio deal A £55m investment in a new radio system for the Welsh Ambulance Service is due to be announced by the Welsh Assembly Government. Currently, a third of Wales is out of radio coverage, with different control rooms using different systems. The 10-year deal funded by the assembly government means ambulances will have the same system as other 999 services. Ahead of May's assembly elections, Wales' other main parties pledged their commitment to improving the service. The Welsh Ambulance Service has suffered a turbulent 12 months. In May 2006, the acting chief executive, Roger Thayne, walked out after two months in the post saying the trust was in "crisis" and later claiming 500 people were dying each year because of failings. The investment marks a significant step forward in the trust's modernisation of the service Alan Murray, chief executive, Welsh Ambulance Service His successor as interim chief executive, Anton van Dellen, also resigned after two months in the job, saying he was unable to commit long-term to the post. In August, Alan Murray was appointed chief executive and said improvements would be made by Christmas. But official figures released last November showed emergency response times were the worst since 2003. The assembly government said the investment in the new radio system was part of plans to modernise the service and was in addition to £16m funding announced in October for new vehicles. Ambulance control rooms will be upgraded and new radio systems installed in all 827 vehicles, including 454 ambulances and three air ambulances. 'More efficient' Welsh Health Minister Brian Gibbons said the investment would help "transform and modernise" the service and would also provide a safer working environment for staff. Dr Gibbons said: "The new communications system will provide far greater radio coverage across Wales, compared with about 65% at the moment. "This will help the control rooms keep in touch with the crew and will enable the trust to become more efficient and effective in deploying their resources." Mr Gibbons added the new system would ultimately improve response times and patient care. Welsh Ambulance Service NHS Trust Chief Executive Alan Murray said the investment would mean the service had the latest digital communications technology. "It will replace all existing communication equipment in ambulance control centres and stations and will provide staff with immediate and dependable communications with other emergency services," he said. "The investment marks a significant step forward in the trust's modernisation of the service in Wales and will enhance patient care and improve service delivery." - UK : SW : Elderly vegetable thief gets Asbo That has to be one of the best comedy headlines I have seen recently.. A 76-year-old man who stole vegetables and ornaments from gardens and allotments has been served with an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo). Magistrates heard how Phillip Powne, from Yate, near Bristol, had caused considerable distress to the residents of Iron Acton. He trespassed through gardens and allotments in the early hours, stealing ornaments, wheelbarrows and vegetables. He is now prevented from entering private gardens by the five-year Asbo. Philippa Isbell, of South Gloucestershire Council, said: "We hope that this Asbo will reinforce the seriousness of Powne's antisocial behaviour."

BBC NEWS US drugs suspects held in custody A couple facing extradition to the US over an internet-based drug making ring have been remanded in custody. Kelly Ann Shanks, 29, and 43-year-old Brian Howes were refused bail at Edinburgh Sheriff Court. The couple were detained on Tuesday following a police operation in Bo'ness, near Falkirk. It has been alleged that they supplied chemicals to illegal drugs laboratories in the US involved in making the synthetic drug methamphetamine. The arrests of Mr Howes and Ms Shanks - a mother-of-four - came at the climax of an international operation involving police and other law enforcement agencies investigating the making of the drug, also known as crystal meth. Sheriff Isabella McColl refused bail mainly, she said, to protect the public, to ensure the proper administration of justice and because of the special circumstances of the case. Further hearings are due to take place in March. As far back as 2004, Howes and Shanks ran an internet business suspected of supplying a global network of meth labs in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries Earlier Mr Howes, originally from Middlesbrough, was taken back to his Bo'ness home by police in handcuffs while they searched the property. Police said a motor museum and funeral premises were also being searched. The US Drug Enforcement Agency has issued details of a massive drugs production ring in which Mr Howes and Ms Shanks are alleged to have played major roles. Cleveland Police in the north east of England and the Central Scotland force have been involved in a two-year probe into crystal meth production. The investigation focused on the alleged supply of chemicals involved in production of the synthetic drug to individuals in the US, Europe and Australia via the internet. Previous raid The couple were arrested in Bo'ness on Tuesday by Central Scotland Police officers, working on behalf of the US agency. Police also swooped on business addresses in Bo'ness. A spokesman for Central Scotland Police said: "The operation is ongoing." Paul Charlton, US Attorney for Arizona, said: "As far back as 2004, Howes and Shanks ran an internet business suspected of supplying a global network of meth labs in the United States, Europe, Australia, New Zealand, and other countries." A major police operation in June, involving up to 250 officers, saw a raid on the couple's alleged distribution centre in Grangemouth. Police said Mr Howes and Ms Shanks had lived for some time in Cleveland. A US conviction for unlawful importation and distribution of regulated chemicals such as red phosphorus carries a maximum penalty of 20 years, a £128,268 fine or both.
